William “Bill” Edward Fugate, age 81, of Holton, passed away early on July 21, 2025, at Manderley Health Care in Osgood.

He was born on April 29, 1944, in Best, Kentucky, the son of the late Jasper and Mary (Compton) Fugate Sr. His family later moved to the Milan community, where Bill graduated from Milan High School in 1962.

Following graduation, Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force. During his service, he was honored as Airman of the Month, recognized for his alertness and keen eye in identifying a major malfunction in a composite building—an action that reflected his dedication and attentiveness.

His civilian career was also marked by commitment and service, as he spent his entire working life with the government at Jefferson Proving Ground in the refrigeration department.

Bill had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, with coon hunting being a favorite pastime. He took immense pride in maintaining his home, always keeping it in pristine condition, and loved burning firewood through the winter months. His dogs were cherished companions, and he shared a strong bond with them. Bill also enjoyed collecting guns and knives and was a fan of old western movies.

He is survived by his daughter Carol Fugate of Osgood; his lifelong friend Betty St. John; his brother Jasper “Jay” (Sarah) Fugate of Milan; and his sisters Gail Haase of Milan and Phyllis Crossthwaite of Dillsboro, along with numerous niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Billy Fugate; his parents; sisters Louise Mockbee and Pauline Allen; brothers Herbert Fugate and Harley Fugate.
